My Site

My site is proudly built using WordPress. It’s the first of my sites fully built using WordPress, previously my site was a half WordPress/half hand coded. Although it took a little getting used to I’m convinced that a WordPress installation was the right way to go. It makes it easier for me to concentrate on the design and content while adding some features which I wouldn’t have had otherwise.

My site is hosted on a Virtual Private Server from Names.co.

Theme

As you may have noticed my site has a unique theme. Originally it started of as the Prosumer Theme created by Nurudin Jauhari. I then took out the bits I didn’t want, modified some sections, tweaked some parts and generally experimented then stirred it all up and what came out was the site as you see it. The tweaking, fiddling and playing of the theme will go on for a while longer, although I am increasingly happy with the results.

I use slightly different styles of page on some pages where needed. This is easy to do and I’ll blog about how to do it at some point in the near future.

The icons that you’ll find scattered around the site (not the ones for tweeting, sharing on Facebook or Digg) are the Social Network Icon Pack from Komodo Media. It was the nicest from a selection offered on Google Images. It also had a selection of 40+ of Social Networking icons, pretty much covering everything I’ll need.

The header images of me using the laptop and chatting on the phone and of Sheppie and the laptop were taken by a friend Helena G. The font used in the header is Veggieburger from Font Squirrel.

If you plan on building a theme from someone elses theme a really big help is the Web Developer Toolbar by Chris Pederick, available both in Firefox and Chrome (I use the Firefox flavour). It makes it masses easier to work out what classes, ids etc are applying to which elements (use Information menu, Display Element Information). Always keep a regular backup of your theme files somewhere so if it all goes horribly wrong you can jump back a step to when it all worked. Your site/blog will only be as good as the last backup. Be brave and experiment, use the WordPress Codex and Google if your stuck.

Web Store

The web store uses WP Affiliate Platform, WP eStore, WP PDF Stamper and Extra Shortcodes for WP eStore which are paid for plugins available at good value prices from Tips and Tricks.

Amazon Associate

In a few places on my site, I have some links to Amazon. These links are part of the Amazon Associate Programme so here’s the offical statement I have to make

Elliott Rodgers is a participant in the Amazon Europe S.à r.l. Associates Programme, an affiliate advertising programme designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.co.uk
