Spammer reported to Ubiquity Server Solutions

July 02, 2010 By: Elliott Category: Randomness Bit.ly URL: http://bit.ly/mIVz1Y

So someone just had to try me on my Rules for leaving comments. Sadly you bottom-feeding pond scum, you picked the wrong day and the wrong time to behave like a t**t. This morning someone using an IP from Ubiquity Server Solutions decided to spam multiple times from the same IP on the same page. I know it was them as they had the same IP address each time. A screenshot of the spam comments and details has been sent.

I’ll update this post with any replies from Ubiquity Server Solutions… If any. I don’t count an automated reply telling me a ticket has been logged.

Oh and they used gmail accounts so I’ll probably report them to Google as well. After some marmite toast, cup of tea and doing the washing up from yesterday (I hate washing up so it’ll put me in the mood for a rant).

Update: Less than an hour later, had a reply from an Allen Jenkins saying they’d passed the complaint onto the customer responsible for the server oh and he added Thanks.

Update: They obviously take things “seriously” given that further spam reports went unanswered and they didn’t deal with the fact the original spammer sent an abusive message.

Way to go on a spam policy!

I think they are training their spamming account holders to be smarter spammers. I had blocked most of their IP blocks but left the LA one open. I had a spammers sign up early this morning posting one generic reply that almost seemed okay but with a link Flowable Concrete Fill – w w w.lightcrete.co.nz/ user Cedron5jesus email alden5jesus @ aol.com from 173.234.48.183.rdns.ubiquityservers.com

Guess I’m going to finish the original work and block all their IP ranges. The spam war escalated quite a bit since I last visited here. But I managed to slow things way down with a bunch of add-ons and blocked IP ranges.

I have this much to say for them – I know a lot more about this type of stuff than I did when I first visited here. Would have rather used the time for other things but we don’t have that choice, do we?

    Hi Dan,

Sadly that seems to be the case. I’m so glad for plugins (especially Akismet) that help, otherwise problem would be so much worse! Hourly checks to find all the spam and delete it.

Given a couple more people who are having significant problems with spam originating from Spammer reported to Ubiquity Server Solutions in one form or another maybe Allen Jenkins would like to comment on his supposed spam policy. I bet I could find quite a few more via Google.

  3. Hello Elliot,
I am sorry it’s come to that, as such, I am going to see what I can do to further push the spam issue. It’s an issue that all web hosts have to deal with all the time and of course, it’s not fun at all dealing with because it hurts a reputable company that provides services other than just web hosting as well. I’ve seen a couple other blog posts with my name in them and all they do is slander and talk terrible about my name which all I do is provide support for users having issues and system administration.

    Jon:
Allen, could you tell us more about Boboc, Alexandru – Ion, Pana – Niculae, Bogdan-Constantin – Sigmund Gainey? Mr Boboc especially seems to enjoy doing business with Ubiquity/Nobis – you assign him a /24 or /23 on an almost weekly basis.

    1
–No, sorry, I cannot give out personal customer information. If you’re wanting additional information on our customers, you’ll need to submit a court ordered subpoena to our abuse contact at http://nobistech.net/

    2
Oh I mentioned how Allen’s friends were allocated 108.62.0.0/16 back in December 2010 – since then they’ve reassigned most of that to the Romanian spammers* – many reassignments took place on April 03rd or 04th and they continued until yesterday – watch out for a big increase in Nobis spam.

–I am not sure what you mean by my friends, but I have no relations from any of the customers of Nobis outside of support unless they order 3rd party applications or themes that I have developed for 3rd party software.

    3
Btw can you let me know whether or not Allen visited you via a .phnx.qwest.net address? Would be quite strange if he did.

–I don’t know why that would strange? I can tell you that I live in Arizona now and moved from Illinois, and the company had moved offices to Arizona back in August of 2010. I have absolutely nothing to hide nor do I have any issues with you guys asking me questions that I can answer without going against the company I work for or my own companies.

    Thanks for your concerns however!

    –Allen Jenkins

  4. Sorry for the double post, I didn’t see the next two comments.

    Dan,
We don’t train spammers, we simply have no time to do so because of the fact that we provide other services as well. We provide dedicated servers, VPS, shared hosting, IP Transit, and other hosting services to end users. We provide managed and unmanaged services. Most users that are doing such spam, purchase unmanaged services. Users get complaints, they forward those to us, then we send complaints to the customer to get them taken care of. If you continue having issues, then let us know.

Any concerns further with our policies, will need to be forwarded to our support center.

    Allen,

I don’t consider the comments made about to as a personal attack which slander has to be. It seems to me that they were comments regarding your level of customer service or lack of it.

If you dislike these comments then maybe you need to improve your customer service and responses to spam issues or not put yourself out there dealing with customers on the internet.

You have the answer to a lot of the problem in your own comment

watch out for a big increase in Nobis spam

    WTF?!

Are you serious?! In the same comment you whine about people making comments about your customer service and response to spam you warn people tlo expect a big increase in spam?!

In my opinion – and since this is my blog I think I have the right to share my opinion.

Any web host or sys admin who is aware in advance that customers or persons acting through that customer are going to be spamming and does nothing is condoning that behaviour and thereby as guilty as the person doing the spamming.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

  6. Elliot,
Haha, that was not my comment, I was quoting what was already said. Please re-read the other posts that was stated clearly in the post by Jon Wright on
16th April 2011 at 3:00 pm. I never stated to watch out for a big increase in Nobis spam. Sorry for the confusion.

I don’t mind your post either, but it’s directed towards one person, myself. You’re stating I have lack of customer support, among other things, which is not entirely true and you cannot base that off of one ticket but I am sure you will argue that like everyone else would just seeing that one ticket.

Mind that, I get hundreds of tickets that I do each night, so if you want, please email me the ticket Id so it can be fully reviewed, I don’t mind that at all. My concern is not to make you people mad or backup any spammers on the internet, but to give the people I deal with, the best customer support possible, to which I have given since 2002 and many people have seen this from me in the past.

In closing, I appreciate your concerns with the Nobis Technology Group. Any additional concerns or comments, feel free to email me.

If it walks like a duck… I just keep blocking all their IP ranges. I get nothing but spam attempts from them so my only experience is that they cater to spammers since I have never had a legitimate signup from one of their IP addresses. Too bleeping busy to try to dig up logs and report them considering there seems to be no positive change from doing so – waste of my time. I do know a duck when I see one…

  8. Elliott says:

    Sorry for misunderstanding over comment….

I have submitted multiple spam reports and get the standard “we’ll notify the customer”. The same IP is STILL sending spam a week later.

Judging by people’s comments here and elsewhere this doesn’t seem to be unusual.

  9. It’s all good, misunderstanding happen. If you’re still getting the same issues, please forward me ticket IDs and IPs and I’ll take care of it or look further into the root cause. I can’t do anything without follow ups, ticket Ids, or the Ips in question.
